Looking Glass

“The Looking Glass Outdoor Sculpture”

Commissioned in 2004 by the Na ‘Aina Kai Botanical Garden in Kilauea

on the island of Kaua’i, The Looking Glass celebrates the growth of a flowering plant.

The story of growth from seed to bloom is depicted in bas relief vignettes on the frame of the magnifying glass itself. Nestled in a bed of living flowers, within the magnifying glass itself are large scale scale Bronze and Silver Vinca, an ornamental and medicinal flower found in Kaua’i. The handle of the Glass is made of multiple strips of Copper woven by the artist into a lattice design which suggests leather. The entire sculpture is seven feet in length.

Enso Woven Copper Gate

The three panels are covered with strips of Copper woven together into a fabric-like texture and given a patina finish. The center section has the symbol Enso made in Bronze with a light patina finish. The Art Gate is in front of a home in Waimea on the island of Kaua’i.

Bamboo Cold Tub Faucet

Created out of Copper, this Art Faucet has two outlets. One fills the tub; the other acts as a rain shower. The magic in the design is that when it is off it resembles a Bamboo sculpture that blends into the surrounding planting. There are two smaller Bamboo twigs acting as faucet handles. To activate them you move one handle to the side which creates the water flow. The leaves are made in two parts with a slit where the water flows. The other Bamboo twig has the illusion of being broken where a Frog has climbed up to greet the viewer. Moving Frog to one side turns on a gentle rain shower giving you the feeling of a tropical rain.

The owner wanted an Art Gate to incorporate the sunrise at one end of the property and sunset on the other end. It needed to be light and airy yet still meet local building codes.

This is my first all Copper entry Art Gate. It measures 14 feet across and is 4-5 feet high. My client wanted a gate that has a elegant inviting feeling that was see-through and not intimidating. She also wished to incorporate Bamboo. The photo was taken before the new posts and landscaping were finished.
